Our gardens are at the heart of the homestead. We grow seasonal produce, herbs, edible plants and seeds while sharing what we’ve learned along the way. Mendocino County is a landscape of remarkable microclimates, and our own terroir gives us an especially short growing season. That keeps us experimenting — finding new ways to work with our land, extend the season, and give our plants the time they need to thrive. Whether you’re planting your first garden or expanding one you’ve tended for years, we believe growing food builds skills, confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to the land.

Creativity is essential on a homestead. When something needs to be grown, built, repaired, preserved, adapted, or simply made to work, you learn to use the knowledge, skills, materials, and resources you have. One solution leads to another, and over time necessity builds an interconnected collection of skills — and the confidence to create the next solution.

Our off-grid system grew this way. Over the years, Bill has expanded and adapted it as our needs changed, growing his knowledge and skills right along with it. What began as necessity became experience — and that experience becomes the foundation for solving the next problem.

Independence isn’t about never having problems — it’s about developing the knowledge and skills to solve them. Living off-grid means the systems we depend on are also the systems we have to understand, maintain, repair, and improve.

When the power goes out around us, we often don’t even know it happened. But when a water line breaks, a pump fails, equipment needs repair, or the homestead presents us with a new challenge, we have to figure out what happened and how to fix it. Necessity keeps us learning.

Over time, those individual skills become interconnected. Understanding water leads to plumbing, pumps and storage. Producing your own power means learning solar, batteries and electrical systems. Growing food leads to soil, weather, preservation and cooking. Building and repairing lead to understanding materials, tools and how things work.

We believe in building and supporting the soil food web and micro biomes to grow high quality, organic, nourishing food. Nutrient dense food is produced through nurturing the soil life. Therefore, we make our own compost, biochar, and compost tea with site sourced inputs.
